Works just like it is supposed to. Good instructions made installation quick and painless. Tech support stayed in touch (proactive—not in response to a problem) in case anything came up.

I used headless mode to connect my MacBook Pro to my 2017 iMac 27 inch.

Highly recommended.

Review of luna display

Worked as advertised. I used to make an old imac into a second display. I had to update the IOS to allow wired support. The wifi connection was quite poor/boarder-line unusable.

Excellent performance using Intel iMac 5K 27 inch as Luna Display slave

My two aims for installing Luna Display have been met.

1. PRIORITY AIM. Mac Mini Pro 4 with iMac 2017 5K as Luna Display slave. Key benefit - Virtually perfect experience using my iMac 5K 27-inch screen using Retina Resolution enabled. Connected using Peer-to-Peer Thunderbolt cable (USB 3.1 Bus upto 12 Mb/sec, according to Apple About This System). A second 4K screen is also connected directly to the MiniMac via HDMI cable.

Impressive: I can view two concurrent instances of highest resolution Youtube videos on the two screens (Our Internet speed is about 350 Mb/s). Frankly, I cannot see a difference between the main display (connected direct to MacMini with HDMI) and the Luna slave.

Minor problem. Very occasionally I see artefacts which are not disturbing eg when I scroll a page of text quickly, there's a little fuzziness, but no lag.

Tech Specs: Mac Mini 2024 M4 chip Memory 48 Gb. 12 cores.
Luna Display Settings:
A. Max resolution: Automatic Max Refresh Rate: Automatic.
B. Mac-toMac Connect via Thunderbolt only.

2. Secondary Aim: Preliminary Investigation. MacBook Air to iMac 2017 5K as Luna slave. Not so great since there was lag, even after adjusting the resolution and refresh parameters in Luna. But this trial gave me hope that when I later acquired my Mac Mini Pro (Item 1) I’d get seamless performance. I suspect I made the right choice in specifying my Mac Mini Pro.

Luna Master Specs: MacBook Air 2019 Intel Dual core i5. iMac 2017 as in Configuration 1.

Minor Distractions and problems
A. Re Configuration Number 1. Sometimes the Peer-to-Peer connection appearing in Luna states USB, and sometimes Thunderbolt. That’s a mystery. I have the Luna device and Thunderbolt cable plugged side-by-side in the Mac Mini designated Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports, and connected to the iMac with Thunderbolt 5 cable. So why I only get 12 Mb/sec as above seems strange.... but not a performance problem!

B. When I shut down my Mac mini with Luna still running the Mac Mini hangs. The Mac Mini then does a forced abnormal restart.

Workaround for Mac Mini hang
1. Escape from slave Luna display (iMac) before shutting down
2. Quit Luna on Master Mac mini
3. Shutdown computers.

I also note the Mac Mini runs quite warm. Not quite egg-fryingly warm! I guess 50% warmer than my hard drives and iMac. I’ve no idea if Luna is driving up energy use.

All in all, I’m very satisfied that the Luna Display with my Mac mini Pro gives me access to a near-perfect experience with a 4K screen and repurposing of my iMac 5K 27 inch Retina screen. Well done, Astropad.
